Celebrate Stuart’s Birthday – Feb 8

February 8 – SMHS Joins Stuart SCV Camp to Celebrate Stuart Birthday

The Stuart-Mosby Historical Society will once again join with J.E.B. Stuart Camp 1343, Sons of Confederate Veterans, to celebrate the birth of Major General James Ewell Brown Stuart on Saturday, February 8, 2025.

            The event will be held at Stuart’s gravesite in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, beginning at 10 a.m. SMHS Member Carl L. Sell Jr. and current Vice President Ben Trittipoe will be the featured speakers, talking about how Flora Stuart maintained the legacy of her husband, Gen. Stuart, in the years following the War Between the States. Sell’s book about the General, his family, staff and friends will be available for $25 with ALL proceeds accruing to the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society.  Cash sales only! Few are left!

            Gen. Stuart was born at Laurel Hill, in Patrick County, Va., on February 6, 1833, and the ceremony will honor the 192nd anniversary of his birth. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on May 11, 1864, and would die the next day at his brother-in-law’s home in Richmond.

            Following the ceremony, those interested will be treated to a tour of prominent Confederate graves at Hollywood Cemetery, including President Jefferson Davis, Generals Fitzhugh Lee, Eppa Hunton and George Pickett, as well as the “Soldiers Section” – where several Mosby Rangers are interred.

            And after that, all are invited to join together for a friendly lunch in the Richmond area (site to be determined)  Each person will be on their own for payment.

Meeting: Tuesday December 17th

Our Tues December 17th meeting is our covered dish dinner BYOB, with our social hour and then a period of planning and discussion on camp operations. Please feel free to share what you like or see room for improvement. i.e. meeting site, meals etc. We need members to volunteer for camp roles. This is written out and proscribed in our camp By-laws.  It is also a chance to get to know each other better and  discuss our ancestors, which I find to be fascinating. Please be prepared to to share a minute or two about a Confederate ancestor. We don’t know our fellow members well and this is a good opportunity to learn history.

Meeting: Tuesday November 19th

Our speaker is Art Wingo. Art is a certified guide through the US Park Service.  He is posted at Chimborazo Hospital building each Friday to provide information and give tours of the facility.  Once the value of hospitals was recognized Richmond became a hospital center due to the five railroads serving the city.  It is my understanding that Chimborazo Hospital  was advanced for the time and was able to save soldiers from the certain death if left in field units.  Art is a member of the Longstreet SCV camp here in Richmond.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Chimborazo Hospital.

Doors open at 6pm and dinner is served at 6:30. $15.00 for evening or $5.00 w/o meal. Planning for delicious fried chicken with fixings and desert.

Mosby’s Men Executed in Front Royal

September 23, 2024, at 6:00 PM

FRONT ROYAL, VA – Don Hakenson, current president of the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society, will deliver a poignant speech on the executions and hangings of Mosby’s men in Front Royal during the Civil War. The event is scheduled for September 23, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Mosby Monument in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal, VA 22630 This event is proudly sponsored by The John S. Mosby Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Hakenson, a descendant of Thomas E. Anderson, one of the men who was shot, brings a personal connection to this tragic chapter of local history. His presentation will shed light on the events surrounding these executions and their lasting impact on the community.

The speech will cover:

  • The historical context of Mosby’s Rangers during the Civil War;
  • The circumstances leading to the executions in Front Royal;
  • Personal stories of the men who were executed, including Thomas Anderson; and
  • The impact of these events on local families and the community.

This event is open to the public and offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into a lesser-known aspect of Civil War history in the Shenandoah Valley, and is a fantastic opportunity to learn about local history.

Meeting: Tuesday September 17th

Our speaker and author will be William Connerly. He has spoken at camp meetings and at the Chapel on topics such as the CSA Shenandoah, Pres. RE Lee at W&L, Pres John Tyler and the Confederacy, and John Mosby.

He has a new program on the outbreak of war in Northern Virginia. In addition to interesting topics on the details he will present an overview of the Battle of Balls Bluff. Here, on October 21,1861 in Loudoun County, Confederate forces gave Gen George B. McClellan a humiliating defeat which would haunt the Union forces for the rest of the war. Confederate forces suffered 155 casualties vs the yankees 1,002.
